The Philadelphia Flyers have signed winger Jody Shelley. Shelley played for the Sharks and Rangers last year. The deal is for three years, and is worth 1.1 million dollars per season. Shelley has 16 goals in his career, similar to the 1,347 penalty minutes that he has racked up.

This move does not do too much for Philadelphia. It probably means that Aaron Asham will not be brought back, which is actually a shame. Oddly enough, the two goals that Shelley scored last year came in the final two games of the season, against the Flyers.

The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions.

June 9th, 2010 will be remembered as a devastating day for Flyers fans. Thanks to a goal from Patrick Kane that somehow got past Michael Leighton, the Chicago Blackhawks became the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions.

But while Philadelphia came up short, their season was extremely successful. It took the final game, overtime, and the final round of the shootout to even get into the playoffs. From there, they toppled over the #2 seeded New Jersey Devils. After that, they seemingly ran into a wall as they found themselves in a 3-0 hole against the Boston Bruins. But the Flyers became the third team in NHL history to be down 3-0 in the series, and come back to win. And they were even down by a score of 3-0 in that game seven.

In a rare occurrence, the #7 seeded Flyers met the #8 seeded Montreal Canadians. And just like in the previous rounds, the Flyers prevailed. Which brings us to now, where Philadelphia was on the short end of the stick. After Chicago’s initial celebration, the crowded let out a “Let’s Go Flyers” chant, to show appreciation of the season the Flyers had.

The Flyers join the Phillies (who won the World Series in 2008), Eagles, and 76ers in losing efforts. All four major Philadelphia sports teams have lost in the Championship within the past ten years. This one stings, especially because of the way it ended. It’s time to focus on baseball, but not before we thank the Flyers for a memorable 2010 season, that unfortunately ended up short.

Sunday night, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 7-4 to take a 3-2 series lead in the Stanley Cup finals. After letting up three goals in the first period, the Flyers put in backup goalie Brian Boucher to try to stop the bleeding. However, he had just as much failure as Leighton had.

So far, each game has been won by the home team. On Tuesday night, the series heads to Philadelphia, where the Flyers look to take back control.

Dustin Byfuglien tallied two goals and two assists for Chicago. For Philadelphia, Chris Pronger had a +/- of –5, which is the worst of his career, counting both playoffs and the regular season.

The Flyers got a much needed win Wednesday night.

Entering Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers found themselves in a 2-0 series deficit against the Chicago Blackhawks. While the Flyers became the third team in history to come back from a 3-0 series lead just two rounds ago, losing game three would have essentially sealed the Stanley Cup going to Chicago.

With the game all tied up, Patrick Kane scored quickly in the third period, which sent the Philadelphia crowd into panic. However, Ville Leino answered a mere 20 seconds later, sending the crowd into a frenzy. In overtime, it looked as if Simon Gagne won the game for the Flyers. With the red light on and the players celebrating, the puck never crossed the line, and thus the potential game-winning goal was taken away. With the Philadelphia crowd in a nervous state, Claude Giroux sent that nervousness away when he scored in overtime, which gave the Flyers a 4-3 victory.

Now down 2-1 in the series, Philadelphia looks to even it up. If they do not, Chicago is in serious command.

The Chicago Blackhawks took a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup finals. The Hawks are now half way home to their first Stanley Cup in nearly 50 years.

The Chicago Blackhawks took a 2-0 series lead over the Philadelphia Flyers last evening, winning an exciting game two, 2-1 in Chicago. The Blackhwaks were led by a stunning third period performance by goaltender Antti Niemi. Niemi was fantastic in the third period, making 15 saves, including several from point blank range when the game was in the balance. Chicago’s Marian Hossa and Ben Eager scored just 28 seconds apart at the end of the second period to take the two goal lead. The Flyers cut the two goal lead in half with a Simon Gagne goal five minutes into the third but were unable to come up with an equalizer.

The Flyers now return home to the Wachovia Center in a 2-0 hole. To say game three is a must win is an understatement. In order for the Flyers to win game three, they do not have to change much. They were the better team for most of game two, they just could not solve Niemi. The Flyers must find a way to slow down Marian Hossa, who has been dominant in the first two games of the series. It would not be surprising if coach Peter Laviolette changed his strategy and matched Mike Richards line against the Hossa line to try and slow him down.

The Philadelphia Flyers have an opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead over the heavily favored New Jersey Devils tonight, at the Wachovia Center.

The Philadelphia Flyers have an opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead against the #2 seed New Jersey Devils this evening at the Wachovia Center. The Flyers have outplayed the Devils for a majority of the series, but have been unable to crack Devils goalie Martin Broduer easily. Sunday, the Flyers dominated long stretches of the game, especially in the third period, but were unable to beat the Devils netminder. Several minutes into overtime, the Flyers finally were able to put one home, as unlikely hero Daniel Carcillo finished off a nice feed from Mike Richards to give the Flyers the win and take home ice advantage in the series.

Thus far, the Flyers biggest worry heading into the playoffs, goaltending, has not been a problem, as Brian Boucher has been fantastic. He has limited the Devils to just three goals total in the Flyers two wins of the series. Going forward, the Flyers must continue to toe the line of playing tough but staying out of the penalty box and keeping the Devils off of the powerplay. The Flyers physical play has frustrated some of the Devils, notably Ilya Kovalchuk, who has taken a few retalitory penalties.

Ray Emery’s season is over, and there are major questions about whether the Flyers goalie will ever play again.

The Flyers announced yesterday that Emery would undergo surgery on his right hip at a date to be determined.

Emery is suffering from avascular necrosis – a condition in which poor blood supply leads to death of bone tissue – and will have a bone graft to alleviate the hip issue, the Flyers announced. It is the same ailment that ended Bo Jackson’s baseball career.

In a conference call with reporters last night, Emery sounded stunned by the developments and acknowledged that he would have a difficult road back to the NHL.

Emery said doctors have told him the success rate for the surgery is 95 percent, but said that was for “being mobile [again], not playing professional sports.”

The surgery will be performed by David Ruch at Duke University Medical Center.

“It’s something I have to get done, and after that I’ll do my best to get back,” Emery said.

Click here to read the full article – By Philadelphia Inquirer
