The time when Brian Westbrook serves exclusively as the Eagles’ lead running back may be coming to an end.


It may not happen Sunday, when the Eagles play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lincoln Financial Field or the week after that or the week after that.

But as Westbrook continues to show signs of wear and tear, and as rookie second-round draft pick LeSean McCoy continues to find his way in the NFL, it seems certain that the change will come.

Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg addressed the issue Thursday, when asked whether he believed the days of the one-back offense in the NFL are over.

“I haven’t studied that in depth, but I think it’s been over for a while with a few exceptions,” he said. “This is a tough, physical game, and it’s become very specialized as well.

“Many teams have a normal-down back, a third-down back and then a changeup back, so I think it’s been over for a while with the exception being those rare, special players, which Brian was.”

Then, pausing for a moment, Mornhinweg added, “and is.”

This isn’t to suggest that Westbrook’s contributions will be limited. Westbrook said Thursday that his injured ankle feels fine and he’s ready to go following a two-week break.
