No. 2 Villanova survives No. 15 Robert Morris’ upset bid in OT

Posted by GameSetMatch on 18th March 2010

Scottie Reynolds and No. 2 seed Villanova nearly had their NCAA tournament run end in the biggest of upsets.

Reynolds responded to his benching with a clutch performance at the foul line in the final minutes of regulation, and the Wildcats survived a scare from Robert Morris in a 73-70 overtime victory Thursday in the NCAA tournament.
Coach Jay Wright sat Reynolds at the start of the game to make a “teaching point,” and he missed 13 of 15 shots from the floor. But the senior star made seven of eight free throws in the final 3:06 to send the game into overtime, finishing with 20 points.
Karon Abraham scored 23 for Robert Morris (23-13), which was on the brink of becoming only the fifth No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 and the first since 2001. Abraham let fly a 25-footer in OT that cut it to 71-70 with 10.2 seconds left, but an off-balance 3 at the buzzer was no good.
The Colonials left the court to a standing ovation.
The Wildcats (25-7), trying to reach their second straight Final Four, entered having lost five of seven and were a surprising pick for the No. 2 seed in the South Regional.

Reynolds, Fisher help Villanova roll to first 19-1 start

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th January 2010

Villanova is 19-1 for the first time in school history.

“Awesome,” coach Jay Wright said.

Maybe reaching its first Final Four in 24 years last season was only a starting point for Wright’s talented team.

Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each scored 17 points to help No. 3 Villanova beat Notre Dame 90-72 on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats are 19-1 for the first time and are the only Big East team unbeaten in conference play (8-0). Led by Reynolds, Fisher, Antonio Pena and Co., Villanova has won 10 straight games and is in the mix for the top spot next week in The Associated Press poll.

“We’ll spend a lot of time after the season talking about this,” Wright said.

Villanova recruit’s age in question

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th November 2009

The good feelings surrounding Villanova as the Wildcats prepare to open their season took a hit yesterday after a report that suggests freshman center Mouphtaou Yarou may be six years older than the age of 19 listed on the university’s basketball Web site.

The report in Sporting News Today cited an item on the Web site for FIBA – the international governing body for basketball – that listed “Mouphtaou Monra Yarou” on the roster for Renaissance BBC in the 2007 FIBA Africa Cup, listing his age as 23 and his hometown as Matitingou.

If that Yarou really is Villanova’s highly regarded 6-foot-10 freshman center, that would make his age 25, and could exhaust most or all of his eligibility for the Wildcats.

The Villanova basketball Web site listed Yarou’s age as 19 – born June 26, 1990 – and his hometown as Natitingou, starting with an N and not an M, in Benin, West Africa.
